Allotment community work day.

First of all big thank you to those that helped out last month I am sorry it was all a bit confused at the start but we did get some jobs completed we aim to be a bit more organised this time. On Sunday 17th we will be looking to trim the boundary hedges and cut back undergrowth, weeding the polytunnel in the community area, ongoing building works to the community room and more than likely the start of a long term changes to the area of allotments near the main gate. If you have hedge shears or strimmers it would be helpful if you come equipped.

Thanks

Jackie

Community Work Day – Update

The first community workday was held on Sunday 15th April at which we had hoped to carry out a series of maintenance jobs needed on the site.  The turnout was very disappointing as only two allotment holders, as well as the usual committee members, turned up to do the work.  The consequence of this obviously meant that only a small amount of the work we wanted to get done was carried out.  In any event many thanks to Steve PORTER and David KIRKHAM who turned up to help on the day.

Burning Dates

The following is an updated list of dates on which the burning of garden waste is allowed on the Old Park Farm Allotments CIC.

Members are reminded that burning should be carried out with consideration for neighbours surrounding our allotment site.  We regularly receive complaints from neighbours about thoughtless burning.  There are local laws governing this to which you and not the company are personally liable.

Please keep smoke to a minimum by not burning damp or newly cut garden waste such as grass.  DO NOT bring any materials from your home address to burn at the allotments.  DO NOT burn anything of a toxic nature such as rubber, plastics, oil or roofing felt.  Any person found doing so will be subject to sanctions from the allotment committee.

Remember please that much of what you may want to burn can just as easily be composted, burning should only be of organic none compostable materials.

Sunday 13th May 2018.
Sunday 10th June 2018.
Sunday 8th July 2018.
Sunday 12th August 2018.
Sunday 9th September 2018.
Sunday 14th October 2018.
Monday 5th to Sunday 11th November 2018 inclusive.
Sunday 9th December 2018.

Firstly, thank you for those few who made the effort to attend on a cold Sunday morning or sent apologies for not doing so (5 only). As only 6 non-committee members attended there are a couple of points that I wish to summarize as they affect everybody.

Inspection 2018. Again please remove all barbed wire from your gates and fences as instructed last year at that AGM, also, see the Health and Safety Guidelines published today which re-iterate this.

We can no longer expect Community Payback to be on site as often as they have been. Communal jobs, therefore, need to be done by us. The third Sunday of the month starting in April will be a day of community jobs that need doing. We are hoping that many of you will be prepared to offer a couple of hours on a regular basis.

I received notification on the Friday before the meeting that due to council budgets there will be a massive hike in direct let allotment rents to 56p per sq mt over next 4 years this is the equivalent of our charges being £240 per garden per year. This will have a massive impact on the way our rent is set and looks as if it will be based on good management of the site and determined by the work we have done towards the new lease and subsequent management agreement.

The BBQ this year will be on Saturday 1st September.

If people wish to know more about any of the above then please feel free to contact me.

A Summer Reminder

Hello Everybody. Its that time of the year when i need to remind you of the Councils requirements of your tenancy agreement. Gardens should now be at least 50 % cultivated and that means with fruit, vegetables or flowers. Grass does not count. Weeds should be as under control as possible and hedges should have or be in the process of being trimmed and neatened in preparation for a good cut in the Autumn. The requirement of the council is that hedges should be 5ft high, we allow a neat 6ft if the hedgerow is mixed or has a wire fence in it, which would stop cutting to the required height. The council inspection this year asked us to remove any barbed wire around gates and any in hedges, so please start this process. If you have a problem complying with any of the above or are thinking of giving up your garden i would appreciate knowing as soon as possible. I shall be doing my own checks over the next week and certainly some letters will be going out asking for improvements to ensure an offer of a tenancy for October.

Don’t forget the BBQ on Saturday 2nd September, further details will follow.

We offered to put on communal bonfires to help individuals get rid of non or hard to compost materials. Disappointingly even after the notice put out on March 20th the day after the AGM, when this was discussed, some still thought that it was appropriate to put plastics, carpets, a table, sheets of metal, insulating material and wheelbarrow loads of soil, brick debris and vegetable matter on the pile to be burned.

This is not appropriate!  Some of the rubbish put on the fires lately are health hazards to the person firing the bonfire, never mind the potential environmental damage.

Until further notice there will be no communal bonfire on the main car park. So do not put waste matter there anticipating someone else will get rid of it.

There should be little cause to burn anything through the summer months most garden produce can and should be composted.  Hedges especially privet will compost and no one should be cutting that for the next two months because of nesting birds. The recycling centre at Lenton Lane also takes green waste for free.

The recycling bay was set up to be an exchange of useful things between gardeners not a lazy person’s dumping ground. Beer cans, empty bin liners, bricks and party hats are not at all useful to the greater majority here, they are also things that may put your tenancy at risk if the owners are discovered!  Take your rubbish home don’t expect other people to get rid of it.  If the rubbish continues the bays will stop.

A small few of us have to deal with this abuse, to take the rubbish off site, to check the fires are safe and worst of all to set these fires, without benefit to themselves in fact quite the contrary.  It’s a shame that a few people are willing to abuse a service that could be a benefit to all.

If this causes individuals a problem please don’t hesitate  to contact me and come and have a chat.

A big thank you to Eddie Scothern for his generosity in offering to use his privately paid for skip to get rid of the carpets and other rubbish and helping to clear up.
