Annual Inspection

I have been notified that the annual inspection is in the first week of September. That gives us 3 weeks to prepare.  If you have not yet trimmed your hedges down to the required height please do so over the next couple of weeks.  The council expects to see at least 50 percent of each garden under cultivation. If there is a reason this has not been achieved on your plot I need to know. It is very important that I can tell the inspector what is happening to each plot and its history this enables us to keep our rental rebate. Please contact me ASAP with your reasons for non cultivation where appropriate.

Annual Show And Barbecue

The annual BBQ and show is only a few weeks away. Join us on Saturday 5th September.

Show off any fruit or vegetables or flowers which you are particularly proud of or that are unusual quirky or of interest to others. There will be a lighthearted judging and an auction. Entries in by 12 noon please.

There will be a flea market sale of bits and bobs rescued from Reg’s old gardens. We will also be running a Raffle. If anyone wishes to donate something as a prize  for the raffle that would be very welcome.

The BBQ will start around 1.30 pm.  Food, beer and soft drinks will be available to all. If you intend to bring friends/family it would be helpful to the caterer (me!) to know in advance.

Old park farm honey is now available for purchase at £4 a jar from the 3 Steves and myself.  It’s particularly tasty and was produced on the allotments.

Compost Delivery

Hi all,  at around 2pm tomorrow (Wednesday 8th April), there will be a delivery of 2 pallet loads of bags of compost which we need to move into the association hut.  If you are around or can make yourselves available for half an hour to help move it it would be greatly appreciated.  Please help if you can.  Thanks.  The Committee.

Thanks to  Pete Eady, Chris Skinner, John Gallagher, Pete Grove, the others who arrived but were late because the delivery came early and the committee for turning up and unloading over two and a half tons of stuff.

Dear Allotment users,

I am a 2nd year student at York University studying Film and Television Production and would like to present a proposal for a documentary focusing upon allotments. The documentary would delve into the positive health and social benefits allotments provide as well as exploring the sense of community that exists there. Having worked on the family allotment for the past few years, I have grown very fond of the relaxed atmosphere and friendly community there, and would like to share this with the world through this project. In addition to this, allotment land is rapidly disappearing, building developers purchasing land from the councils becoming increasingly frequent in recent years. This project could help show the true value of allotments and how they benefit communities and individuals alike, and help save these treasured plots of land.

The documentary itself would consist of a series of interviews that showcase individual allotments and their owners, showing how and why they have allotments. Through the contrast of these interviews I would like to build up an image of the community that the allotments embody. As an example, here is a web link to a test edit of an interview done with john Menzies (Allotment 65) :

I will be returning from university for the Easter holidays from March 20th to April 6th and will be available for shooting in between these dates. If you are interested in this project and would like to take part, or have any queries in general about it, please let me know.

My contact details are as follows:

EMAIL:   cm1091@york.ac.uk

MOBILE: 07708228704

I look forward to hearing from you, and hope this project will be of some interest to you.

With thanks,

Charlie Menzies

The Annual General Meeting will be held on March 15th 2015 at 10 am in the association poly-tunnel.

Could we ask that you please make every effort to attend as your views and votes are needed on some important matters this year including:

  • How we manage our next rent increase.
  • A possible new constitution.

These matters concern you personally and this will be your only opportunity to discuss them and vote on how they will be implemented.

There will be a presentation where you will be invited to take part in a Nottingham University research project into gardening and health and have a chance of winning £100, as part of this you can have your allotment soil tested to learn its Ph level and nutrient content,  this is an offer and not obligatory as part of the above.   You will also have the opportunity to take part in a documentary film to be made about your allotments.

Another issue we need to address is that due to gardeners leaving us we need new active committee members.  To become a committee member you will need to download and fill in this form – Click Here to download and print it.

If you have any other items you wish to be discussed would you please submit them briefly in writing to Jackie or any other committee member before the date of the AGM.

Lastly light refreshments will be available.

Bonfire Party Cancelled

It’s with regret that we are going to cancel tonight’s bonfire party.  The amount of rain we have had and the amount promised for today has made the site and the bonfire stack soggy and unpleasant so its been decided to postpone it to another day perhaps nearer Christmas.  We apologise for any disappointment this will cause you and particularly to any children you were bringing and who were looking forward to it.
