As we said in the last posting on the site we had ordered a quantity of compost and other items for your use during the coming growing season.  Happily this has now been delivered and the following are now available for purchase as follows:

  1. Growell Multi Purpose Compost – 60 litres @ £4.50p per bag.
  2. Mother Earth Multi Purpose Compost  – 70 litres @ £3.90p per bag.
  3. Grow Bags @ £2.50 per bag.
  4. Growmore 25Kgs @ £14.80p per bag.
  5. 8 foot long bamboo canes @ £0.40p each.
  6. Garden Lime 25Kg @ £3.70p per bag.

These prices are only slightly higher than last years but still represent a saving when you consider that you don’t have to use your car to collect them.

They will be sold this year from the main committee meeting room instead of the poly tunnel which was the case last year.

The room will be open for 5 hours between 10am and 3pm on the following dates for you to purchase anything you need.

  1. Saturday 16th March 2013.
  2. Sunday 17th March 2013.
  3. Saturday 23rd March 2013.
  4. Sunday 24th March 2013.  (Annual General Meeting Day)

There will probably be other dates also, more details to follow.  In the event that you cannot make any of these dates please see either Steve Yorke who can sell you supplies, or Jackie Medcalf.  If you cannot find Jackie give her a call on 07931 950950 who will arrange to meet you at a convenient time to sell you what you want.

Lastly, we would prefer that you pay in cash as chasing owed money can be very time consuming so please attend with the readies.

Although we called a committee meeting last month there were not enough members in attendance for it to be an official meeting. So although Steve, Kay and I discussed a lot of  “housekeeping” matters minutes were not taken.

I am sure most of you have now discovered that the water is on again.  Can I remind everyone that the water charges make up a large proportion of your garden rental.  As our water is on a meter it is important that we conserve as much as we can and don’t waste it.

(Presuming we will not be singing in the rain again this year.)

DO NOT LEAVE TAPS ON OR HOSEPIPES CONNECTED TO THE SYSTEM WHEN YOU ARE NOT THERE.  (This rule is part of your tenancy agreement.)

There has been a slight delay in the arrival of this year’s compost due to problems with the delivery lorry. The compost will be delivered at 9am on Wednesday 13th.  That coincides quite nicely with the rent weekends and it will be available as soon as we have unloaded and sorted it. The prices have gone up a little since last year but its still worth buying it from site and not having to carry it from a shop.  I just need to confirm the final price to you, which I will do before next Wednesday. Please note it will be cash, as you buy, no credit or IOU’s.

If anyone is around at the delivery time your help to unload would be appreciated, although unrewarded (apart from a big thank you)

Lastly a reminder that the AGM is on Sunday 24th March at 10am in the Poly Tunnel.

Everyone who wishes to stand or re-stand for the committee or an officer’s role will need to complete a nomination form which are available from myself or Steve Yorke.  It really would be nice to have more committee members. At the moment there are too few of us to guarantee the minimum number required for meetings etc.

We hope to see you at the AGM.

Jackie

Firstly a very HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all.

I have put some Dobie’s seed catalogues and order forms in the poly- tunnel in the committee garden. Please have a look and if you wish you can place an order.  All I need you to do is fill in your name and garden number on an order form (where it says members name).  Then fill in what seeds you require in the left hand column. Please complete that bit in full.

Let me have the top two copies. You can leave them in the tray on the table if you like.

I will send you a bill for the total price when I know how much discount to take off.  The discount depends on getting over £100 worth of orders.  So plan ahead please.

You have until Saturday 2nd February. I will send the orders off on that Sunday.

PLEASE RETURN THE CATALOGUES SO OTHERS MAY LOOK AS WELL

I am hoping to recruit more Association Committee Members for the coming year at the AGM on March 24th.

You need to be willing to attend a meeting every other month and willing to be pro active when things need doing. If you are interested please have a chat with me. You will need to be proposed by someone and seconded by someone else.

Jackie

MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING SUNDAY 9th DECEMBER 2012

Present: Chairman: Steve Yorke, Treasurer: Kay Graham, Secretary: Jackie Medcalf.
Sos Inger, Ronnie Gayle, Dan Toher and Steve Medcalf.

MINUTES AND MATTERS ARISING FROM MEETING 7/10/12

Pot holes. Work completed and we had received positive feedback.
Inspection. Letters had gone out to those allotment holders who had been criticised in the Inspection. Jackie had responses from all but one and it was noted that this garden had been worked on since.
Separately from this one garden was being vacated although the keys had not been returned at this time. Two other gardens would also be becoming vacant. Sos urged the secretary to get new tenants on them asap to give them time to prepare the gardens for the new season.
Boundary Fence. Jackie waiting a date for a further meeting with council over this.

TREASURERS REPORT

Kay reported that the Water bill had arrived but it was a very low estimate. Seven Trent had been asked to provide an accurate bill, which they had agreed to do.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Jackie had attended the city council Forum meeting. Nothing much to report other than it had been acrimonious. Talks about new leases were going to be held separately.

Jackie asked for confirmation of the timing of the next steps to be taken.

It was agreed we would again sell compost, bone meal and tomato food etc. Need to order in time for a Feb/ March delivery.

Account letters would go out in February to include the AGM date (24/3/13) with the
details of how to pay rents. Allowing 4 weeks notice of AGM.
The Chairman suggested that the a committee meeting should be held two weeks prior to the AGM and at that meeting the present officers and committee members would all resign. Those wishing to re-stand for either office or as a committee member will then put themselves forward for re-election at the AGM. This was agreed by all present. The Secretary said that details of how to stand for election to the committee would be circulated to all gardeners.

AOB
Seed catalogues; some mixed feelings over whether to offer this service due to previous secretaries experience. Jackie to decide what she wants to do.

Meeting closed at 10.45 am

Hello to all avid readers of this blog.  May I wish you all a Happy and prosperous New Year, and one which may be a bit dryer than the last one.

Some enterprising soul, who is probably not an allotment holder,  has recently been placing numerous bags of what appears to be either wood chippings or the detritus from the bottom of a chicken coop up against the various gates of our glorious allotments in turn.  This has been going on for a few weeks now and no doubt those of us who have been to the ‘water gardens’ as they are now known, will have seen them.   The reason I bring this to your attention is that just as mysteriously as they have arrived they have just as mysteriously, until now,  disappeared within a few days of being deposited.  As you may know in a previous life I was a member of the bacon battalion and my extensive training as a detective led me to work out that they may have been left there by arrangement with one of our number who has then removed them for their own use.  The last lot of bags to have been left, this time outside the bottom gate near the railway bridge,  have now been there for some time however, and show no sign of being spirited away in keeping with previous practice.  Could I ask that if anyone knows either who is leaving them there, or better still, for whom they are being left that they contact Jackie, (the secretary on 07931 950950) so that we can get something done about getting the last lot shifted.

The problem with stuff being left like this is that it encourages other fly tippers to come and deposit their own rubbish which, is something to be avoided.  Old Coach Road has been visited by the fly tipping fairy twice this past year to my direct knowledge and it means that someone else has to arrange to have it shifted.

Thank you in anticipation that someone can and may possibly help.

After a run of success thirty days in advance, the New Year has not turned out as expected. However, a full January forecast will follow tomorrow to subscribers. This week will begin very mild, windy and unsettled before settling down later as high pressure takes over. It will become less mild especially in the South, where overnight slight frost and patchy fog may be a feature by the weekend. Here’s your forecast:

Monday: Windy with gales perhaps severe in the North and West. Also some rain followed from the West by scattered blustery showers that reach East Anglia and the South East after dark. It will be very mild then colder, with the showers turning wintry over Scotland giving hill snow. Top temps 8 to 12C. Min temps 2 to 5C.

Tuesday: New Years Day sees sunny spells, but a cold wind brings blustery showers mostly to Scotland and North East England. These could be wintry in places giving hill snow, before fading. It will be fine after dark with a slight frost, before more rain moves into Ireland overnight. Max temps 4 to 7C. Min temps -2 to +2C.

Wednesday: Bright but cold in the East at first, but most parts become rather cloudy and see some rain. Amounts in the South should be small or showers, but winds freshen again everywhere with gales likely in the North. All parts become milder once more with temperatures rising slowly through the period to eventually reach 7 to 10C.

Thursday: Mild everywhere but breezy, with some rain or showers mostly in the North and West. Some bright weather though, mostly in the East and to the lee of hills. Winds should decrease overnight. Top temps 7 to11C. Min Temps 3 to 6C.

Friday: A pressure rise settles things down with lighter winds, although Ireland and West Scotland may still be breezier and somewhat changeable. Elsewhere it should be mainly dry with variable amounts of cloud. Max Temps 7 to 10C. Min temps 2 to 5C.

The Weekend: A few showers and breezier over Ireland, otherwise mainly dry with clear or sunny spells but variable cloud in generally light winds. Less mild by day, say max temps 5 to 8C. Colder where skies clear at night especially over England and Wales with a slight frost and patchy fog. Min temps say -1 to +4C.

General Notice

To all allotment holders:

Some tools have been stolen from one of the top annexe gardens including a new digging hoe.  Whilst the gardens are quiet this is the perfect time of year for thieves and fly tippers to strike.

Some gardeners are still leaving the gates open.  It is in all of our interests to keep the gates locked at all times no matter how inconvenient it seems to close and lock them after you.  It could be you that loses some valued items!!!!!!!!!!

Although I do come up to the gardens at least a couple of times a week and have a walk round it’s very rare to see many gardeners here.  Please remember that if you want to contact me at any time over any issue you are more than welcome to ring, text or E-Mail me at any time.

New Padlock

It’s not news that will change the world but for some it will be of interest.  The padlock on the gate adjacent to the railway bridge has been replaced with a new one.  I know there are a few of you who use that gate.  The previous lock gave up the ghost a few weeks ago and fell apart so we splashed out and bought a new one.
