Annual Inspection

I have been notified that the annual inspection is in the first week of September. That gives us 3 weeks to prepare.  If you have not yet trimmed your hedges down to the required height please do so over the next couple of weeks.  The council expects to see at least 50 percent of each garden under cultivation. If there is a reason this has not been achieved on your plot I need to know. It is very important that I can tell the inspector what is happening to each plot and its history this enables us to keep our rental rebate. Please contact me ASAP with your reasons for non cultivation where appropriate.

Annual Show And Barbecue

The annual BBQ and show is only a few weeks away. Join us on Saturday 5th September.

Show off any fruit or vegetables or flowers which you are particularly proud of or that are unusual quirky or of interest to others. There will be a lighthearted judging and an auction. Entries in by 12 noon please.

There will be a flea market sale of bits and bobs rescued from Reg’s old gardens. We will also be running a Raffle. If anyone wishes to donate something as a prize  for the raffle that would be very welcome.

The BBQ will start around 1.30 pm.  Food, beer and soft drinks will be available to all. If you intend to bring friends/family it would be helpful to the caterer (me!) to know in advance.

Old park farm honey is now available for purchase at £4 a jar from the 3 Steves and myself.  It’s particularly tasty and was produced on the allotments.

Missing Cat

A local resident has lost her cat and thinks there is a possibility that he might be found on the allotments.  Attached is a picture of him along with a description and contact details of his owner.   If you should see him would you contact her please and get the re-united.  Thanks.

bramble

Large (34”) fluffy tabby-and-white male cat missing from Burnwood Drive. Note that he has no white on his face. He often visits Denholme Road but is frightened of traffic so unlikely to have crossed Glaisdale Drive. He has not been seen since 10th June (on Belmore Gardens) so I am widening the search.  If you live or work in Bilborough or Wollaton, please look out for him and check your outbuildings. If you see him, please call Zoë (owner) on 928 2896 AT ANY TIME, Mae on 928 6385 or Lynn (24 hours) on 989 0243. He is very shy so please don’t approach

Burning Of Garden Waste

Yet again we have received complaints about allotment holders burning things on their gardens on days other than sanctioned burning days.  Let me state again the rules for us to avoid ‘confusion’.  We are allowed to burn garden waste (nothing else) on the second Sunday of each month, not on any other days. This includes wood and other natural materials.  It does not include plastics, rubber, carpets or other potential pollutants.  If it’s  raining on a burning day that is just bad luck and if you are unable to get a fire going then the burning must be held over to the next available burning day.

In addition to this we currently also allow ourselves to burn small amounts in braziers, this however is now under consideration because again people are abusing this by burning inappropriate items or by trying to burn damp garden waste which then creates large amounts of smoke causing annoyance to local businesses and residents.  Brazier burning should be used for readily combustible dry materials which causes little or no smoke and nothing else, it should not be used to burn damp green garden waste or built in such a way with materials which cause smoke build up.  Please remember that we exist in a smoke control area and are subject to local authority control for which garden holders can individually be fined personally up to £5000 for causing nuisance with fires.  Please stick to the rules or we may find ourselves losing the ability to have any fires at all.  The dates for the rest of this year when you may burn garden waste are as follows – again:

  • Sunday 14th June 2015
  • Sunday 12th July 2015
  • Sunday 9th August 2015
  • Sunday 13th September 2015
  • Sunday 11th October 2015
  • Sunday 1st to Sunday 8th November 2015 (The whole week containing Bonfire Night)
  •  Sunday 13th December 2015

Thank you in advance for your co-operation in this matter.

Compost Delivery

Hi all,  at around 2pm tomorrow (Wednesday 8th April), there will be a delivery of 2 pallet loads of bags of compost which we need to move into the association hut.  If you are around or can make yourselves available for half an hour to help move it it would be greatly appreciated.  Please help if you can.  Thanks.  The Committee.

Thanks to  Pete Eady, Chris Skinner, John Gallagher, Pete Grove, the others who arrived but were late because the delivery came early and the committee for turning up and unloading over two and a half tons of stuff.

Dear Allotment users,

I am a 2nd year student at York University studying Film and Television Production and would like to present a proposal for a documentary focusing upon allotments. The documentary would delve into the positive health and social benefits allotments provide as well as exploring the sense of community that exists there. Having worked on the family allotment for the past few years, I have grown very fond of the relaxed atmosphere and friendly community there, and would like to share this with the world through this project. In addition to this, allotment land is rapidly disappearing, building developers purchasing land from the councils becoming increasingly frequent in recent years. This project could help show the true value of allotments and how they benefit communities and individuals alike, and help save these treasured plots of land.

The documentary itself would consist of a series of interviews that showcase individual allotments and their owners, showing how and why they have allotments. Through the contrast of these interviews I would like to build up an image of the community that the allotments embody. As an example, here is a web link to a test edit of an interview done with john Menzies (Allotment 65) :

I will be returning from university for the Easter holidays from March 20th to April 6th and will be available for shooting in between these dates. If you are interested in this project and would like to take part, or have any queries in general about it, please let me know.

My contact details are as follows:

EMAIL:   cm1091@york.ac.uk

MOBILE: 07708228704

I look forward to hearing from you, and hope this project will be of some interest to you.

With thanks,

Charlie Menzies
