November Newsletter

I think we can all agree it’s been a remarkable year weather wise and it’s certainly caused some issues with our water bill, very definitely not helped by the outsourcing of non-domestic water charges to non-Severn Trent companies. A lot of time and effort has been put in by both Steve Yorke and Steve Williams to try to stop us from getting ridiculously large monthly estimated bills.  This year has bought home though how vital it is for all gardeners to be collecting rainwater. If you have a building on your garden you should have a collection barrel rigged up. If you want help/advice just ask.

The Community work days have been frustrating in as much as a small regular team has turned up and some gardeners have taken jobs on themselves as a regular task. But it’s the same faces. There is no immediate chance of offenders coming and giving us a helping hand so we need to do maintenance and project work ourselves. Harry’s old gardens need converting and I am trying to be inventive on how this is achieved. We cannot afford to let gardens stand idle and have no income coming in. I am trying hard to get tenants on the two other gardens we have vacant. Over winter we will advertise some work days on the plots near the gate and try to blitz the work. Obviously, we wish to say a big thank you to those who do turn out to help.

As you are aware we are facing proposed rent rises. I am in the process of attending a series of 3 evening meetings with other associations and the council where rents and new leases are being discussed. How this will all turn out I honestly have no idea at the moment, but because everyone’s leases end at different times the council ideas could mean varying rents or charges between various associations. The current proposals for council direct let gardens would see 56p per sq meter, associations without new leases would be about the same, with a new lease it would be about 30p as a starting point.

The AGM next year will be on Sunday 17th March it is very important that you make the effort to come, or send a representative if you can’t. It was snowy this year but that does not really excuse such a poor turnout. If you want to keep the allotments going then you need to take an interest and have a say in what is happening.  We need more active Committee members, it is very possible that we might have to fundraise to keep rents down which is one of the proposals the council has made, plus keeping the site well managed and tidy, we need fresh ideas and fresh faces and a bit less moaning when things don’t get done.

Steve Williams our Treasurer is standing down so we need someone to take on that responsibility as soon as possible. Our financial year starts on the 1st January, so before then would be ideal. Help and support will be given. This role is vital we cannot continue without a treasurer. For an informal talk about the roles responsibilities and how much time is needed please contact me.

If you wish to know any more about the committee, the council proposals and rent rises please feel free to ask me. Please keep your eye open for news and a possible early new year meeting/vote if any decisions are made on the lease over the next couple of months.

Water Supply

As usual, the water on site will be turned off shortly after burning Sunday which is this Sunday, the 11th November.

Over winter if you have a shed or similar on site please, if you have not already done so, construct a water collection system.  If you need help or advice on how to do this please ask.

Severn Trent has outsourced their bills to another company who want estimated monthly payments based on this year’s extraordinary water usage.  This is being opposed but it has taught us a valuable lesson that as a community every one of us needs to be collecting and storing rainwater. We need to take individual responsibility for water conservation and we need to be doing it now.

Please look out for a newsletter next week as I have been called to a meeting on Monday about the rent rises and proposed new lease.

If anybody saw what happened or has knowledge of how our main security fence has been so badly damaged it would be helpful to know. We believe it happened on Friday 26th October after 1pm. It is hard to miss, so if you saw the damage or didn’t but left the gardens on Friday afternoon, it would be helpful to know what time you were there and if you saw the damage. If you have any information at all please contact me.

Garden Fires

As is traditional you are allowed some extra burning time over the Bonfire period.  As Bonfire night itself is on Monday 5th you can have fires from Saturday 3rd through to Sunday 11th, which is the normal burning Sunday.

However, please be aware of those around us who will be at work during the week so please restrict daytime burning to small fires, if you need to set fire to a larger bonfire please do it in the evening when bonfires for fireworks night will be burning as well. As usual please don’t burn anything that will cause excessive smoke, especially green woods anything wet and certainly nothing toxic e.g plastics, roofing felt etc.

As always I would point out that if complaints are received about fires it is the person who has lit the fires, not the association who will liable for a large fire.

Please be extremely careful and make sure you are working in the safest way possible, preferably not on your own and that hazards have been removed before you set light to a fire and that you are not using exploding chemicals, such as petrol as an accelerant.

The Nottingham City Council want to substantially increase allotment rents to help cover their expenses in running the allotment service due to cuts in overall funding by Central Government to Councils in general.  Yesterday they sent an email and poster inviting people with allotments to have their say by filling in an online survey/questionnaire.  The link to this survey is as follows:

Nottingham Allotment Survey

Push the big orange button when you access the above link.

YOU ONLY HAVE UNTIL THE 14TH OF OCTOBER TO ANSWER THIS SURVEY SO IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN EXPRESSING YOUR VIEWS TO THEM YOU WILL NEED TO GET ON WITH DOING IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

It should be noted that as things stand this proposal concerns direct let sites, however, it will have an impact of association sites like ours in due course.

The body of their email to allotment associations was as follows (the survey link is in there too).

=====================================================================

Dear Leasehold Allotment Association Secretary or Association Council Contact,

I am emailing you as our records show that you are listed as one of your allotment association contacts in our database. In this instance I am emailing all association contacts, as well as secretaries, to publicise the continuing consultation on changes to allotment rent rates. If you no longer represent your association please let me know and I will amend our records accordingly.

The Allotments Service has previously asked for the views of allotment associations as part of the ongoing consultation on Nottingham City Council’s proposals to increase the direct-let allotment garden rent rate and make changes to fees, charges and tenancy conditions. Nottingham City Council’s Allotments Service is extending the consultation to welcome the views of leasehold association allotment-tenants, other gardening bodies, and citizens on the current proposals.

Please find information on the proposals and online consultation survey at the link below.

https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/engage-nottingham-hub/open-consultations/allotment-rent-rates-and-changes-to-tenancy-conditions/

We would be pleased if you could publicise this consultation with your site’s tenants and explain how these proposals could affect your tenants on your site in the future.

With your permission, we would like to erect a poster on your site gate. We would be pleased if you could also put a copy attached on your notice board.

I will also send an email shortly that can be forwarded on to your tenants.

If tenants require information by post please ask them to call 9152727 and leave a message requesting a consultation pack that includes their request for consultation materials, site name, name, address, and phone number.

The closing date for the consultation is Sunday 14 October 2018. Please be aware of the short window of consultation with this final group of allotment users and others.

As an association, if you wish to email any further views or require information by post please contact the Allotments Service at allotment.office@nottinghamcity.gov.uk or on 9152727.

Regards

Rent Reminder

Just a note to remind those who have not yet paid that all rents need to be paid by 1st October. There are a couple of you who have still not paid who have been unable to comply with the tenancy agreement this year so if you are thinking of giving the allotments up please contact me as a matter of urgency so we can make some decisions. If you are struggling to pay, again contact me, please. If you have not paid by the 1st of October then the tenancy will end and you will need to return your keys and remove tools and rubbish.

Thanks

Jackie

Burglary Update

For some reason, we had a glitch with the last post so I am adding it again.

Today we have recovered a small generator and a jigsaw which we presume were stolen during the burglary at the weekend. No one has told me that these have been lost so if you are missing one or both or know someone who has please contact me. Also, it’s obvious that our friends were picking up tools and equipment from one garden and then leaving them in another so if you have found yourself with something that is not yours please let me have it and i will attempt to get it back to its rightful owner.

The Burglars Came Back

For the second time in two weeks, we have had intruders on the gardens, this time they seem to have been more systematic, it’s presumed they came in over the railway gate and worked their way down the gardens including the brick building.  We know things have been taken and discarded presumably when they have found something more interesting and have now stolen some valuable items.  They will come back because they have not been in everyone’s gardens yet.  Take home anything of any value now!   Report thefts to me and to the Police.  DO NOT LEAVE THE GATES OPEN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  Challenge strangers safely, if they don’t know the secretary’s name they should not be on the gardens.
