Nefarious Goings On

Hello all. Yesterday it was reported that over the weekend one of the official city green taxis was parked up at the bottom end of Old Coach Road near the railway bridge, outside the lower gate to the allotments.  The driver, an older Asian male was seen in the rear of the car with a young white girl and although nothing untoward was seen it was obviously quite a concerning observation bearing in mind recent grooming events which have gone on around other areas of the country.  The driver when he realised he had been seen, got into the front of the car and drove quickly away.

The following day, early in the morning, the same witness observed two young Asians in a smaller car parked in the same place smoking cannabis which he smelled as he walked past.  As he entered the gardens this car also turned around a sped off paying undue attention to the witness as he entered the garden to a point where he felt that the two incidents might in some way be connected.

I have myself on occasion seen vehicles parked at the weekend at the bottom of the road with people in them with no real reason to be there, the factories being closed etc.  I have reported these incidents to the Police on behalf of the garden holder and they have promised to step up patrols in the area, however from my own experience I know this can be hit and miss.  Could I ask that if any of you see anything like this yourselves that if possible, AND WITHOUT DRAWING UNDUE ATTENTION TO YOURSELVES, that you try and obtain the registered numbers of cars you observe together with a time that you see the cars there and perhaps the colour and type of car you see.  If you then report this to Jackie or myself we will co-ordinate this with the Police and hopefully nip this in the bud before it becomes an issue for us.  Thanks for your help and please let me stress that whilst no threats have been made to anyone you should be careful in obtaining any details of vehicles if you should witness anything yourself.  Thanks – Steve Medcalf.

Garden Clearance

We will be clearing two gardens that used to belong to Reg Elmer over the next couple of months.  There are twenty buildings on the gardens all full of half a centuries worth of gardening equipment.

It is our intention to sell as much as we can to raise funds for the hire of skips that we will need to clear the gardens so we can lease them again.  Hopefully over the next few weeks we will split everything into different parts e.g. pots and tools.  There  are a couple of greenhouses plus frame parts. there is also a lot of poly-carbonate, a lot of which is in good condition.

If you are interested in a greenhouse please contact Jackie.  Priority is being given to gardeners who do not have one on their plot.

We will have some rummage sales at some point but in the meantime you are welcome to talk to us about what is there if you think you might be interested.  All proceeds from any sales will be shown in the accounts.

Compost Delivery

Hi all,  at around 2pm tomorrow (Wednesday 8th April), there will be a delivery of 2 pallet loads of bags of compost which we need to move into the association hut.  If you are around or can make yourselves available for half an hour to help move it it would be greatly appreciated.  Please help if you can.  Thanks.  The Committee.

Thanks to  Pete Eady, Chris Skinner, John Gallagher, Pete Grove, the others who arrived but were late because the delivery came early and the committee for turning up and unloading over two and a half tons of stuff.

One of the members asked me to look at butterfly / bird netting for him.  I have found what appears to be a good source at the following web site:

http://garden-netting.co.uk/acatalog/Butterfly_Netting.html

The company are:
Gardening Naturally, 8 Wilkinson Road, Love Lane Industrial Estate, Cirencester, GL7 1YT
Tel: 01285 654241
Tel: 0845 6800296

They describe their netting as:

Butterfly Protection Netting
Protect your crops from birds and butterflies with butterfly protection netting.

This 7mm square netting is made from UV stabilised HDPE. It is heavy duty and will stop cabbage white butterflies and birds attacking your vegetables.
Light enough to be laid directly over the crops and soft enough to drape, also ideal for covering hoops and cages.
Another brilliant use for this netting is covering ponds to protect them from debris, herons and cats.
Available in widths: 2m/ 4m/ 6m/ 8m.

If your are ordering per metre then the minimum quantity is 3m.

Dear Allotment users,

I am a 2nd year student at York University studying Film and Television Production and would like to present a proposal for a documentary focusing upon allotments. The documentary would delve into the positive health and social benefits allotments provide as well as exploring the sense of community that exists there. Having worked on the family allotment for the past few years, I have grown very fond of the relaxed atmosphere and friendly community there, and would like to share this with the world through this project. In addition to this, allotment land is rapidly disappearing, building developers purchasing land from the councils becoming increasingly frequent in recent years. This project could help show the true value of allotments and how they benefit communities and individuals alike, and help save these treasured plots of land.

The documentary itself would consist of a series of interviews that showcase individual allotments and their owners, showing how and why they have allotments. Through the contrast of these interviews I would like to build up an image of the community that the allotments embody. As an example, here is a web link to a test edit of an interview done with john Menzies (Allotment 65) :

I will be returning from university for the Easter holidays from March 20th to April 6th and will be available for shooting in between these dates. If you are interested in this project and would like to take part, or have any queries in general about it, please let me know.

My contact details are as follows:

I look forward to hearing from you, and hope this project will be of some interest to you.

With thanks,

Charlie Menzies
